Former FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and obstructing a legislative process.
Mr Comey's lawyer filed the plea on his behalf in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
The defense lawyer announced he would try to have the legal matter terminated for various reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was indicted soon after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.
At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they intended to present several motions to throw out the proceedings before a trial, claiming the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to handle the case.
Mr Comey's case was originally handled by the original attorney, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to file indictments.
The former director appeared in positive mood as he came into the court on mid-week, speaking with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was supported by his partner, Patrice Failor and child Maureen, a US lawyer who the former government dismissed.
Upon hearing to the court state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the charges.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.
The former director was the FBI Director from four years and was terminated about four months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, he was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a backlash from liberal politicians when he declared just immediately preceding the national vote that he was investigating political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.
Prosecutors assert Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he misled the upper house by claiming he had not approved a person at the agency to disclose to journalistic entities data about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, hinder and impede" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.
Through a recording the former director published to his social media after he was accused, he stated he was innocent and charged Trump of acting like a "dictator".
"Our household have been aware for a long time that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."
The charges against James Comey emerged after Trump shared on social media insisting on his attorney general, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and additional individuals.
