Donald Trump has repeatedly announced he would influence FIFA to relocate global soccer tournament events from a designated city based on that city's governance, with Massachusetts emerging as the most recent urban area to receive such warnings from the US president. Moreover, Trump suggested he would contemplate similar action against LA for the 2028 Summer Games due to possible security concerns.
Even though Trump holds no official jurisdiction to personally cancel either competition, he can apply pressure the international organizations managing each event to move locations.
The remarks were made during a press event with Argentinian president Milei, who was present in the executive mansion following the disclosure of a $20 billion financial assistance for the Latin American country. At the end of the event, a media member inquired Trump about a latest public disturbance in Boston where authorities were attacked and a cruiser was ignited. The correspondent also asked if these incidents could lead to the loss of tournament responsibilities for the expanded soccer tournament.
“It's possible to take them away,” Trump stated concerning the FIFA World Cup matches, set to be hosted at the Foxborough venue. “The city's leader is ineffective … she is extremist, and they’re dominating sections of downtown. It's a major statement, isn't it?”
Unauthorized gatherings, a online-fueled trend where large crowds congregate on public avenues during nighttime to engage in dangerous driving, have been a frequent issue in metropolitan centers since the lockdown restrictions. Current incidents have become aggressive in Massachusetts, including Boston. Yet, these events are typically not seen as tied to any specific partisan agenda.
“If a city is doing a bad job, and I believe there’s unsafe conditions, I would call the FIFA head, who is phenomenal, and say let’s move it to another location,” Trump said during the event. “And he would do that. He might not prefer to do it, but he would comply. Readily, he would.”
Gianni Infantino has made no secret his efforts to be publicly aligned with the former president ahead of the 2026 event, planned to be organized in 11 cities across the America along with a couple in the northern neighbor and a few in Mexico. The FIFA president has participated at various presidential functions, facilitated Trump hand over the Club World Cup trophy after the championship match, and has even delayed his own organization’s congress to accompany Trump on a visit to the Arab region previously.
This has not stopped, Trump from suggesting the relocation of FIFA World Cup games from other US host cities. In late September, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis were similar statements, with Trump asserting both locations were “led by ideological activists who lack understanding what they’re doing,” while challenging the safety level of both locales and claiming that matches could be removed.
FIFA vice-president Montagliani dismissed Trump’s statements when he commented afterward at a conference in England.
“This is our competition, under our authority, the organization determines those decisions,” he declared. “Politely to national heads, soccer is transcends them and football will survive their administration and their leadership. It's the strength of our game, that it is bigger than one leader and more important than individual states.”
On Tuesday, Trump’s response to a query about the Massachusetts city veered into a parallel statement regarding the upcoming Summer Games.
“If I perceived the city was not prepared properly, I will relocate it to another location if necessary,” he said. “Regarding that event I may have to secure a alternative permission, but we will do that.”
Any approval Trump refers to would must come through the Olympic governing body. The leader, Kirsty Coventry, was elected to her role in spring and has yet to appear together with Trump, though she stated that she desires a meeting with the US figure at a future time.
The former president also questioned California governor Newsom’s response of recent LA wildfires, stating that a similar situation could lead to the cancellation of the Olympics.
“When he is uncooperative, we are going to have to be firm,” he said.
His statement was equally unambiguous for Boston.
“They must address these issues,” he remarked. “That is I can say.”
