A woman stabbed repeatedly to her neck area in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, facing charges for the violent incident.
He was previously accused of attempted murder but following the woman's death the charge has been updated to include murder.
Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, recounted paramedic and police activity when she finished her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion around 9 PM.
"A lot of co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried about my partner," he stated.
"She doesn't drive and works at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's terrible."
